Toodling up North in Ireland

We had that rental car and the entire country is less area than the state of Colorado.  On my list was the UNESCO Heritage site of the Giants Causeway.  On Richard's list was a trip to Belfast for a hop on hop off tour.

The Giants Causeway is a unique and beautiful natural rock formation that looks like a giant stepping pathway to the ocean.  Columns of rock in nearly hexagonal shape pile up near the shoreline, where waves have beaten down the rock for millennium.  It was pretty majestic.

Afterwards we grabbed a "cake and coffee" at the nearby hotel.  And I got a second item on my wish list, Banoffee Pie.  An incredible combination of banana and toffee flavor in a luscious pie.  Yes, please.  It was a stunning dessert, and a lovely surprise I didn't even know I needed.

Later, we learned that a backpack had been turned in five days earlier.  The person was never found and declared dead.  The old adage, "never turn your back on the sea" is alive in Ireland, sadly.

Waiting on the hop on/off tour, we found a cute little restaurant that looked like a Christmas tree exploded inside.  It turned into a supper club at night. https://ampmbelfast.com/

We were able to return home that night, so a literal day trip to Northern Ireland and Belfast.  What was astonishing to us were the still visible signs of "the troubles" and the fact that they still man the wall and shut the gates dividing the city each night.  While there is no true border between the countries, there is an internal border that gets closed each night in Belfast.
